چکیده

Introduction: Due to the direct relationship between frequency and spatial location, a high field homogeneity is paramount for accurate imaging in MRI. In order to adjust the field, several orders of shim coils are usually available, along with a multitude of methods to detect the optimal settings, ranging from manual to automatic methods ([1]). Recently, a proof of concept has been presented of a method capable of detecting B0 field inhomogeneities by observing the temporal evolution of a free induction decay (FID), using sensitivity differences of coil array elements, named Sense Shimming or short ‚SSH’ ([2]). The results presented so far were limited to phantom measurements, due to expected complications regarding chemical shift artefacts and physiological noise. We here address these problems and present the first in-vivo results.

Generalized Non-Linear SENSE Shimming

Introduction: With the SENSE Shimming (SSH) approach (1) a method was introduced recently that allows for estimating B0 field inhomogeneities based on a reference image and a series of points on a single free induction decay (FID). The temporal evolution of the FID data is explained by field inhomogeneities, starting from the reference image, making use of the encoding properties of the differe...

Basic and Tailored RF Shimming in a Multi-transmit Whole Body MR System

Wave propagation effects diminish the quality of MR images at main fields of 3T or above. Parallel RF transmission has the potential of compensating for these effects through RF shimming. RF shimming can be performed in two different ways. The basic way of RF shimming is to adjust the global amplitude and phase of the currents in each transmit element, aiming at a constant B1 in the region of i...

SA2RAGE: a new sequence for fast B1+ -mapping.

At high magnetic field strengths (≥ 3T), the radiofrequency wavelength used in MRI is of the same order of magnitude of (or smaller than) the typical sample size, making transmit magnetic field (B1+) inhomogeneities more prominent. Methods such as radiofrequency-shimming and transmit SENSE have been proposed to mitigate these undesirable effects. A prerequisite for such approaches is an accurat...

A robust automated shimming procedure for breast MR spectroscopy

Introduction Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS) offers attractive possibilities for the non-invasive in vivo assessment of breast lesion biochemistry, as an aid for diagnosis [1] and an early indicator of disease response to treatment [2-4]. Effective shimming to achieve a high magnetic field homogeniety over the volume of interest (VOI) is paramount for MRS to achieve sufficient sp...

MRS Shimming: An Important Point Which Should not be Ignored

Introduction: Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a well-known device for analyzing the biological fluids metabolically. Obtaining accurate and reliable information via MRS needs a homogeneous magnetic field in order to provide well-defined peaks and uniform water suppression. There are lots of reasons which can disturb the magnetic field homogeneity which can be corrected by a proc...
